Looking for spring craft ideas to make with your Cricut? Then download this free 3d Butterfly SVG file to create these layered butterflies. Learn how to make this 3d butterfly wall art with the step-by-step-tutorial below.

This free layered butterfly svg is so versatile. Use all 4 layers to create these magical flying butterflies. Or use just the top 2 layers for shirts, decals, stickers, etc.
Compatible with all Cricut and Silhouette cutting machines. Easy to resize, change colors and customize however you’d like.

Just follow the steps below to create this 3d butterfly craft with your Cricut!
Supplies Used for this 3d Butterfly:
- Cardstock in your color choices – I used sheets from this packet of pastel cardstock and my favorite white diamond glitter cardstock. I also used this rose gold glitter cardstock and this double-sided gold glitter cardstock.
- Crafting glue
- Rhinestone embellishments – this is optional (but rhinestones make everything great!). Here are the stick-on rhinestones that I use.
- Cricut Maker or Explore Cutting Machine and your green standard cutting mat.
- Scoring Stylus (which is what I will be using in this tutorial) or Scoring Wheel (Maker only). If your cutting machine doesn’t have the scoring feature, this scoring board and stylus is great to use.

Step by Step Tutorial – How to Make a 3d Butterfly
Step 1
Upload the layered butterfly SVG to Cricut Design Space. If needed, this tutorial will show you how to upload files to Cricut Design Space. Before editing your design, you will need to Ungroup your Layers. With all your layers selected, click on “ungroup”.

Step 2
If using a Cricut machine, you will need to change the layer with the lines to “Score” instead of “Cut” in Design Space. You can select all the layers together by holding down shift.
If your cutting machine does not have the scoring option, hide those layers and score the box by hand with your scoring board and stylus after you cut it. The scoring feature is really useful when making paper crafts. So, if you don’t have a Scoring Stylus or Scoring Wheel (Maker only), I definitely recommend getting one.

Step 3
Attach your score lines to your butterfly layer. Hold down shift and select your butterfly layer with the score lines, then select “attach”.

Step 4
You are now ready to cut your project. Click on “Make It.” You should see your score lines on top of your butterfly as shown in the picture below. If you do not, then go back and make sure you have attached your score lines to the butterfly layer.

Step 5
Follow the prompts on your computer to cut your box. If you are using your scoring tool, then make sure to insert this first.

Step 6
After the butterfly layers are cut, remove from your mat. Then attach each piece together (going in order by size) using glue. Only glue the middle part of the butterfly, as you want the wings unattached. Before gluing the top butterfly, make sure to fold on the score lines.

Once the glue has dried, you can begin to fold the wings to get your desired look. Add rhinestones or other jewels if you wish to add embellishments.
These 3d butterflies are great to use as wall art. Just add sticky dots or poster putty to attach these directly to the wall. You can also place this design inside a shadow box for a more finished look.
You can resize the image smaller and glue a 3d butterfly to cardstock to make your own custom cards. Get creative and let me know what you create with this layered butterfly svg design!
