After you create your own custom svg file or download free svg files, you will need to know how to upload it so that your cutting machine can cut your project for you. Whether you have a PC, iPhone, Mac or Android, this tutorial will show you how to easily upload svg files to Cricut Design Space.
What is an SVG and how does it work?
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic. A vector graphic is made up of points, lines and curves, so you can resize it without losing quality, unlike a jpg or png file. You can create vector graphics directly in Cricut Design Space to send to your cutting machine.
Although you can create graphics in Cricut Design Space, you will only be able to share these as a project in Design Space. You will not be able to save these as svg files. So, if you want to create your own svg graphics to share or sell, it’s important to create them using a software that can create vector graphics like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape.
So, now that you know why you need svg files for your cutting projects, let’s learn how to upload svg files to Cricut Design Space.
How to Upload SVG Files to Cricut Design Space
Note: You can upload a file to the Cricut Design Space software from either a desktop, tablet or phone app. Since the screens are different, I’ll show you how to upload svg files for each platform so you can follow along with the tutorial that you need.
Importing SVG Files in Cricut Design Space on a Computer
- Open Cicut Design Space
- From your canvas, click on Upload
- Select upload image
- Browse for your image and open it
- Add tags to your image and save it
- Insert your image
Note: For this tutorial, I am using this free unicorn svg, which is available here!
First, you will need to open Cricut Design Space on your computer. If you don’t already have this software, you will want to go ahead and download Cricut Design Space and create a free account. Once you open design space, your canvas area will be open. Click on the “upload icon” to begin uploading your svg file.
A new screen will appear. This screen shows your recently uploaded images. If your svg is already uploaded, you can find it here. If you need to upload a new svg file, then click on “upload image”.
Select “Browse” and locate where your image is saved.
Once you locate your svg file, select your file and click on “open”.
Add Tags for Your Image Here
Once you select your image, a new screen will appear. You will add tags for your image here. These tags will be used anytime you want to search for images that you have already uploaded. So you want to make sure the tags match what your image is. You can add multiple tags here, just use a comma to separate each tag. Once you add your tags, click save.
You will now see your svg file in the recently uploaded images. Select your image (you will see a green box around the image when you select it) and select “Insert Image”.
Note: Once an svg file is uploaded in Cricut Design Space, you will not need to upload that file again. Instead, click on “view all” (next to Recently uploaded images) and all of the svg files that you have uploaded will be here. This is where you will use the tags that you entered to search for your images.
Your image has now been uploaded to Cricut Design Space! From here, you can change the size and edit your image. For more information on editing images in design space, check out these cricut design space tutorials.
How to Upload SVG Files to the Cricut Design Space App (iPhone and Android)
Note: For this tutorial, I am using this free Let’s Get Lit svg, which is available here!
If you don’t already have the Cricut Design Space app on your device, you can download it here and set up a new account for free. Once you open the design space app, you will click on the blue box to start a new project.
Your canvas is now open in the design space app. Click on “Upload” at the bottom of your screen to upload your svg file.
Your phone will give you a few options to choose from. You will store your svg files in your file folder, not your photo library. So, select “Browse Files”. Find the image that you would like to use and click on it.
Note: If you want to open a file that has already been uploaded, you will select “open uploaded images” and select your image there.
A preview of the file will open up. You will name your file and then save it.
Your file will now appear in your uploaded images. Select your image (when selected, there will be a green box around your image) and select “Insert”.
Your svg file is now in your Canvas area and ready for your next cutting project!
