Graduation Cap Gift Card Holder
Looking for a fun way to give your graduate some cash or a gift card? Try this graduation gift card holder! Just download the graduation cap SVG below and easily assemble it with this step-by-step tutorial.

These graduation gift card holders are not only perfect for giving cash or gift cards but make a great keepsake as well. Use your graduate’s school colors and add their year for more personalization. You can go for the traditional black cap or make it the color they will be wearing as they walk across the stage.

How to Make this Graduation Gift Card Holder:
To make these gift card holders, you will need:
- Cardstock in your color choices – I recommend this variety starter pack of cardstock if you don’t already have all these colors on hand. Otherwise, just make sure that you use at least a 65lb weight cardstock.
- Brass Paper Fasteners like these.
- Any sort of white string.
- Crafting glue.
- Cricut Maker or Explore Cutting Machine and your green or blue cutting mat.
- Scoring Stylus (which is what I will be using in this tutorial) or Scoring Wheel (Maker only). If your cutting machine doesn’t have the scoring feature, this scoring board and stylus is great to use.

Upload Graduation Cap SVG & Ungroup Layers
Upload the graduation cap gift card holder SVG to Cricut Design Space. If needed, this tutorial will show you how to upload files to Cricut Design Space. Before editing your design, you will need to Ungroup your Layers. With all of your layers select, click “Ungroup”.

Add Your Score Lines
If using a Cricut machine, you will need to change the layer with the cut lines to “Score” instead of “Cut” in Design Space. You can select all the layers together by holding down shift.
If your cutting machine does not have the scoring option, hide those layers and score the box by hand with your scoring board and stylus after you cut it. The scoring feature is really useful when making paper crafts like boxes. So, if you don’t have a Scoring Stylus or Scoring Wheel (Maker only), I definitely recommend getting one.

Attach your score lines to your gift card layer. Hold down shift and select your gift card template with the score lines, then select “attach”.

Cut & Assemble Your Graduation Gift Card Holder Templates
You are now ready to cut your project. Click on “Make It.” You should see your score lines on top of your box pieces as shown in the picture below. If you do not, then go back and make sure you have attached your score lines to the box layers.

Follow the prompts on your computer to cut your graduation gift card holders. If you are using your scoring tool, then make sure to insert this first.
Once your pieces are cut, remove from your mat. Then, fold along all the score lines. Add glue to the tabs and glue them on the inside of the box to attach your box together. Repeat this step for the bottom and top box layer.
When you are done gluing all the tabs, you should have a box that fits together perfectly. You can also use this template for making basic boxes.

Glue your 2022 pieces to your square cut out. You can add these on diagonally or straight across. Whatever look you like. Once these are in place, glue your square piece to the lid of your box. While this dries, you can work on your tassel.

Assemble and Attach the Tassel
To assemble the tassel, just continue to roll it up. Make sure to add glue while rolling it up, so that it stays together.

Next, cut a piece of string and tie a knot to make a loop. You want to size the loop for how far you want the tassel to hang. Leave a piece of string attached to the loop to glue and wrap around the top of the tassel. You can watch the video tutorial above to see how this is done.

To attach the tassel, you will need to add your brass paper fastener to the middle of your graduation hat. I think it’s easiest to poke a hole first and then add the paper fastener. Wrap the string of the tassel around your paper fastener and your box is ready to go!

Although these graduation gift card holders are perfect for gift cards and cash, you can also use them for small gifts. Either way, they make a great keepsake, and your graduate will love them!
